Deploying the Desktop App on Windows
This page is for IT teams that deploy the Jetstream Desktop App to Windows computers with Microsoft Intune, Configuration Manager (SCCM), or a similar software-distribution tool.
The Windows installer, Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe, supports a fully silent, unattended
install. Jetstream does not currently ship an MSI. In Intune, deploy the installer as a
Windows app (Win32) as described below.
Getting the installer
Download Windows from the download page. Every release is also available at a stable, versioned URL, which is convenient for scripted downloads:
https://release-updates.getjetstream.app/jetstream/releases/Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe
The installer is signed by Jetstream Solutions, LLC.
Per-machine or per-user
The installer can install Jetstream for every user of the computer or for a single user.
| Install type | Location | Who can install updates |
|---|---|---|
| Per-machine | C:\Program Files\Jetstream | An administrator, or your deployment tool |
| Per-user | C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Programs\Jetstream | The user, with no administrator involvement |
Most managed deployments install per-machine and turn off automatic updates, so your deployment tool alone decides which version people run. If you install per-machine and leave automatic updates on, users without administrator rights are prompted for administrator credentials whenever they try to install an update, and cannot complete it.
Command-line options
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
/S | Silent install. No windows or prompts are shown, and Jetstream is not launched afterwards. |
/allusers | Install per-machine into C:\Program Files\Jetstream. Must run elevated (or as SYSTEM). |
/currentuser | Install per-user for the account running the installer. Does not require elevation. |
/D=<path> | Install to a different folder. Must be the last option and must not be wrapped in quotes. |
Silent per-machine install, from an elevated prompt or as SYSTEM:
Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe /S /allusers
Silent per-user install, run as the signed-in user:
Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe /S /currentuser
The installer exits with code 0 on success.
Upgrading
To move to a new version, run the new installer with the same options you installed with. It upgrades the existing install in place and keeps each user's settings and data.
If Jetstream is open when the installer runs, the installer closes it first. If it cannot close it, the install fails with a non-zero exit code, and your deployment tool will retry on its next attempt.
Uninstalling
The uninstaller lives in the installation folder:
"C:\Program Files\Jetstream\Uninstall Jetstream.exe" /S /allusers
For a per-user install, run "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Jetstream\Uninstall Jetstream.exe" /S /currentuser
as that user. The exact command, including /S, is also written to the QuietUninstallString
value of the registry key below.
Uninstalling leaves each user's Jetstream data in place, so reinstalling picks up where they left off.
Detecting an installed version
The installer registers Jetstream under the standard Windows uninstall key, in the 64-bit registry view:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\1cc64917-37e3-5b25-bfd9-19c922591cc1
DisplayVersion REG_SZ <version>
A per-user install writes the same key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead. Alternatively, check for
C:\Program Files\Jetstream\Jetstream.exe.
Deploying with Microsoft Intune
-
Download the installer and package it with the Microsoft Win32 Content Prep Tool:
IntuneWinAppUtil.exe -c <folder containing the installer> -s Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe -o <output folder> -
In the Intune admin center, go to Apps → Windows → Add, choose Windows app (Win32), and upload the
.intunewinfile. -
On the Program page:
- Install command:
Jetstream-Setup-<version>.exe /S /allusers - Uninstall command:
"C:\Program Files\Jetstream\Uninstall Jetstream.exe" /S /allusers - Install behavior: System
- Device restart behavior: No specific action
- Leave the default return codes.
- Install command:
-
On the Requirements page, select 64-bit and Windows 10 or later.
-
On the Detection rules page, choose Manually configure detection rules and add a Registry rule:
- Key path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\1cc64917-37e3-5b25-bfd9-19c922591cc1 - Value name:
DisplayVersion - Detection method: Version comparison, Greater than or equal to
<version> - Associated with a 32-bit app on 64-bit clients: No
- Key path:
-
Assign the app to your device groups.
To turn off automatic updates on the same devices, deploy the DisableAutoUpdate registry value
described in
managing updates for an organization,
for example with a custom configuration profile or a remediation script.
To roll out a new version later, add the new installer as another Win32 app with the new version in its detection rule and set it to supersede the previous one (with Uninstall previous version turned off, since the installer upgrades in place).
Portable build
If installing software is not an option, the Windows (Portable) build on the download page runs without installation and never updates itself. You replace the executable to move to a new version.
